Marta Empinotti was born on December 18th, 1964 in Brazil and is the second of 4 sisters. She grew up in Porto Alegre which is the capital of the most southern state in Brazil. After traveling throughout Europe and the US in her late teens, she fell in love with and moved permanently to the States at the end of 1985. When Marta moved to the US she had 19 skydives under her belt. She has been skydiving since arriving and some of her accomplishments are: Master Rigger, AFF instructor, Skydive U instructor and skydiving competitor. She made her first BASE jump at Bridge Day in 1986 and fell in love with the sport. In those days BASE was in its crawling stages. BASE gear was not available (at the time modified skydiving gear was being used) nor were there any BASE schools. In those days, having 50 BASE jumps was considered alot, and they were hard to come by. In 1988 Marta co-founded Vertigo, one of the first BASE manufactures in the country (which at the time meant the world). Along with manufacturing came teaching. Those were illegal jumps off of local towers at no cost to the student. Once the demand was there a more structured teaching "schedule" was put in place. Later on Vertigo became Vertigo Base Outfitters. Vertigo was located in Deland, FL until the move to Moab, Utah in the year 2000. While in Moab, she and Jimmy Pouchert, her husband and co-owner, along with many visiting friends, opened up nearly 100 BASE sites, established new and safer guidelines for cliff jumping in the area, organized and hosted the Turkey Boogie for several years with the goal of sharing the new sites with other jumpers, and worked with the local law enforcement and the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) to keep BASE jumping legal in Moab. In 2004 Vertigo Base Outfitters and Basic Research (Todd Shoebotham) merged forming Apex BASE Perris (production) and Apex BASE Moab (courses and events). Todd Shoebotham took over all production of gear while Marta and Jimmy dedicated themselves to the Apex First BASE Jump Course and Event organizing. For the first year, Todd, Marta and Jimmy worked hand in hand to combine the best features of the many products and combine the best aspects of the two FBJC schools. Since the very beginning of her time in America, Marta has been involved with equipment manufacturing and development, test jumping, teaching in the US and abroad, event organizing and demo jumps in the US and abroad, seminars in the US and around the world, stunts, TV shows, TV commercials and several printed articles in the US and foreign magazines, making BASE her job and her passion for over 20 years. When asked what her favorite part of BASE jumping was, she answered, "Most jumpers who come to us have a long time dream which is to BASE jump. It is an amazing feeling to be able to help them make this dream come true and to be part of it. The look in their eyes and the emotions that are painted all over their faces after their first BASE jump is a great gift that I'm so lucky to be able to share with them". In 2010 Marta and Jimmy moved the Apex BASE Moab branch to Boulder, Colorado.
