What size container should I order?

In general, we'll pick out the most appropriate size for you.  Just let us know what size and type canopy you want it built for.  However, here is a general guidline for your reference:

How to Measure

Accurate measurements are a must to assure a good fitting harness and container. Please use a quality cloth tape measure and have someone assist you. If you are going to be wearing heavy clothing when BASE jumping measurements should be taken with this clothing on. Don't randomly add to any measurement as this will alter the fit. Best clothing for measurements are tee-shirt with light jacket or sweatshirt and pants or jeans.

Metric Or Imperial? - Use either, we can convert, but stick with one or the other. Height and Weight - Measure it now with accurate scales. Apex BASE is not responsible for the cost associated with harness rebuilds or harness adjustments if the measurements are taken incorrectly. Please measure carefully and contact Apex BASE if you have any questions.

Height– Overall height of jumper

Weight- Overall weight of jumper

Chest - Place both arms out in a “T”. Place tape measure high under the arms and then lower your arms. Relax and take a normal breath. Measure around chest with the tape parallel to the floor. This measurement should be between 32 - 47 inches or 81 - 120 centimeters. Woman are measured on, not above or below, the breasts.

Waist - Measure the waist around the belt line making sure you are on the hip bone, do not include any belts. The point we need is not the smallest part of the waist nor the widest part of the hips but the point in-between. This measurement should be between 26 - 40 inches or 66 - 102 centimeters.

Upper Thigh - Stand evenly on both legs. Place tape measure as high as possible into the crotch and measure the circumference of one thigh with the tape parallel to the floor. Pockets must be empty.

Torso - Measure vertically from the collar bone to the front rounded edge of the hip bone. Find the "hole in the throat" go to the side to find the top of the collar bone. Go to the waist on the same side and "poke" for the hip bone. Follow the hip until the front curved edge is found. Measure between these two points in as straight a line as possible. This measurement should be between 15 -21 inches or 38 -53 centimeters. Stand up-right, especially if measuring yourself.

Inseam – Have customer hold the tape between two finger then have them place the end of the tape at the top of the leg. Measure to the floor. Feet should be shoulder width or closer. Shoeless for best result or adjust measurement for shoe height.

Pin vs. Velcro?

Pins work for all our BASE needs, high, low and, in between.  Velcro works on low to middle range BASE.  Velcro shouldn’t be used on high jumps.  There’s too much airspeed and the Velcro can come open.  The information recommending Velcro rigs is out dated but still available on the web.  There is a little controversy regarding what’s best for beginners but the vast majority believes pins are the better way to go. 

If you go with a Velcro rig many things will happen:

-you’ll show up to jump and very few people will be able to help you if you have questions about your rig.  Most people jump pins and that’s what they know.

-you’ll out grow your rig if you want to travel to Europe or jump any tall, high airspeed, objects at home.

-you’ll have poor resale value for the used Velcro rig when you go to sell it.  And you will.

With a pin rig you’ve got a rig that is way more suitable for a wide range of BASE needs.  Don’t get me wrong- Velcro rigs can be safe when they are used within their design parameters. A pin rig just has a large window of operation.  The sport owes a great deal to the Velcro closed rig.  It allowed us to grow from skydiving rigs and trust a single parachute system but that is the history.

Built-in Risers?

Built-in risers are those that don’t have a cutaway system, no 3-ring.  When you think about it- it’s a little strange to have a cutaway system on a single parachute rig.  But it’s done all the time, because the 3-ring has proven itself to be safe and reliable.  It allows a jumper to cutaway when in the water, when hung in a tree, or when moving canopies between different rigs.  The built-ins resemble how a reserve is attached to the harness.  There no possibility for a unintentional cutaway.  But if in the water or tree the jumper has to climb out of the harness.  In fast moving water this could be difficult even dangerous.  The built-in’s have gained popularity from two groups.  One group who want a system with one less potential problem, an accidental cutaway. Two are those who don’t want the weight associated with the metal rings (harness and risers), handles and housings. Check out this video for more information.

Bottomless Corners?

Bottomless corners are located in the bottom of the container near the BOC.  Typically a container will have sewn corners down near the BOC.  These corners create a 3-deminsional shape- a bottom corner.  A bottomless corner removes this sewn corner and allows the container to lie flat, thus removing the corner that can bump a deploying parachute.  Wing suiters and aerialist seem to be the most interested in the bottomless corner because having a deployment that is extracted toward the bottom (their feet) is common.  With the bottomless corner the parachutes aft path is unobstructed. There is one down side to them- packing.  The learning curve seems to be 5 to 10 pack jobs.  The first few pack jobs are a little rough because the corners are not present when folding the parachute.  They appear when closing the container.  The technique takes a few pack jobs.


Phosphate hardware is “dark ware”, dark gray almost black.  Phosphate refers to the finish only, not the metal. It is selected for its cosmetic quality and nothing else.  However, phosphate does not have the rust resistance that cadmium (standard) hardware has, but shares strength specs with cadmium.  Stainless steel continues to be the strongest and most resistant to rust and other influences.

Soft or Firm Fit?

Do you like to pack? Do you hate it?  Do you want the smallest rig or the comfiest?

Firm or soft is a very personal choice.  We typically build our containers with a soft fit with relation to the canopy.  This allows a simple pack job and a comfy (loose) fit.  It can be ideal for those packing a BASE rig for the first time, those who live in dry climates, or those that just don’t want to hassle with a tight rig.  Pin tension will be low when packed.  A soft fit will also accommodate a large canopy if needed.  The firm fit is a smaller container for the same size canopy.  It takes a little more technique to pack and feels a little stiffer on the back.  It can be ideal for those already familiar with packing a BASE rig, those who live in humid climates, or those that just don’t mind a little extra work to have a closed rig.  Pin tension will be moderate when packed but well within acceptable limits.  A firm fit will also accommodate a smaller canopy if needed.

Large mesh vs. Small mesh Sliders

There is very little difference but the large mesh allows slightly more airflow than small mesh.  Our standard is large mesh. For sub terminal slider jumps the norm would be to use a large mesh.  For terminal deployments a small mesh is optional.

HTS- Hybrid Top Surface?

The HTS is an option that places a piece of ZP fabric on the leading edge (nose) of all seven cells.  The HTS covers about 30% of the cell (front third) with the remaining 70% using standard 0-3 fabric.  ZP fabric is traditional harder to pack but with the small amount used on the HTS this is not generally a problem.  The addition of the HTS does create an airfoil with a better lift characteristic, mostly felt as better flare performance.

If you are computer saavy, you can choose to download the order forms into Adobe Photoshop and e-mail them as Acrobat files. This e-mail should go to perris@apexbase.com.  You can also take a photo (with a smart phone) and email them to us.

Delivery Times: 
Our normal delivery times are typically 6-8 weeks however during busy seasonal influxes of orders delivery times can extend to 10-14 weeks. You will be quoted a delivery time when placing an order. These are estimations and are not guaranteed. For guaranteed delivery times we offer "Expedite" service. Please call for our current delivery times and "Expedite Service" quotes. 

Delivery times begin after a 50% deposit has been received by Apex BASE.

Shipping Charges 
Shipping charges depend upon the weight and volume of the box being shipped. 
For Domestic Orders, UPS is our preferred method of shipping. 
For International Orders, UPS, and Airmail, and are used for shipping. 

We can only give approximate shipping charges via E-mail, phone, or fax. We do not know the exact amount until we box the equipment and weigh it at the time of shipping.

Written inquiries are also invited, and will be answered as fully and promptly as possible. 

If you have sent an e-mail request and do not receive a response within 48 hours, please contact us again via e-mail or telephone. We request this due to the high volume of spam mail received we my sometimes inadvertently delete your message while clearing spam from our mailbox. 

When you receive your shipment, please note the total amount shown on the invoice is the amount charged to your credit card. You are only charged for the items shipped, plus postage and handling. Your credit card will not be charged for backordered items until the backorder is shipped. 

Order Cancellation Policy
Once the order is processed, a cancellation fee up to 10% will apply. This percentage is based on the stage of production the order is in when the cancellation is received.

Return and Refund Policy 
Unused "new gear" can be returned within thirty days of receipt and will be subject to a restocking fee of 10%. Returns beyond 30 days, if allowed, will incur additional restocking fees and are offered at the discretion of management.  Contact Apex BASE prior to returning any item. 
Video tapes and DVD's cannot be returned. No refunds will be given for shipping, handling, custom items, custom embroidery, custom logos or service related (labor) charges. 

Returned Checks 
Apex BASE will charge $25.00 for all returned checks.
