Apex BASE Advanced Courses

Advanced Course Level 1

The Advanced Course Level 1 is designed to reinforce basics learned in a previous BASE Course or from a mentor to advance your skills to the next level.  It also helps you to have a better understanding of the canopy's aerodymamics: canopy reaction to riser input versus toggle input, sinking, stall point, etc...  We focus on turning a novice BASE Jumper into to a more experienced, stronger, safer jumper, ready and confident to progress to more technical objects, such as buildings and cliffs.  We offer this not only to former Apex students, but to any jumper who wants to improve their canopy skills regardless of the number of BASE jumps he or she has.  Also if you have become uncurrent, or had never had extensive coaching on your canopy skills, this is a great way to get in the game.  You need a minimum packing proficiency in order not to slow the pace of the course down for the other jumpers.  In other words, if you still don't know how to pack, you are probably not ready for this course;)

The Advanced Course Level 1 focuses on the following, but not limited to:

- Rear riser avoidance drills: we will do rear facing exits aka "floaters" "simulating" having a 180 degree off heading opening and turning it around quickly,  we will then purposely pack some 180 degree off heading openings and actually practice turning it around quickly on risers.  This is something that very few people do and it is absolutely critical to experience what an actual 180 opening is like before proceeding to cliffs or buildings.  It's nothing like having an on heading opening and getting on rears, stalling the canopy and turning it around.  When the risers are twisted behind your head and you are spun around to face the object, it is very challenging to find the risers, stop the canopy, back it up if necessary and then turn it around.  Many jumpers never do this drill, and then when it actually happens to them at a cliff or a building, they are taken completely off guard, and don't react correctly, resulting in a wall strike and injury.  At the end of this evolution, you will gain a deep respect for what an actual 180 degree off heading opening is like and will be familiar with it so that you can react correctly when it happens to you at an object that matters, like a cliff or a building.

- Deep brake approaches: you will learn to master the skill necessary to sink your canopy with toggles in any wind conditions without the danger of stalling it and ending up landing on your back or having a hard landing, this is a crucial technique in BASE and should be one of the fundamental building blocks of any solid BASE jumper.

- Accuracy: you will no longer be intimidated to land on the beach or boulder field.  During this course the beach is our primary landing area, the boulder field is our secondary and forget about the big field, it's too easy;).

During this course the instructors will jump with you and show you how each drill is to be performed correctly, also called "monkey see monkey do", film all of the jumps, and video debrief these drills with you after each jump.

We cater each course to the needs, wants or weaknesses of the individual clients in a fun, positive environment.  Every jumper will be challenged to the extent of his or her capability.  Comfort levels will be pushed and at the end of the course you will be a much stronger, confident jumper and ready to go cliff/building jumping afterwards.

Advanced Course Level Two

The Advanced Course Level 2 is a very dynamic course.  It is designed for jumpers who are completely self sufficient packing and have strong canopy skills but still want to grow and improve as jumpers.  Even though we will still work on canopy skills and accuracy, the goals for this course are different than Advanced Course Level One.

Level Two focuses on:

- Multiple ways: 2 ways and 3 ways are not just about stepping off at the same time.  Pilot chute sizes, delays, horizontal vs. vertical separation, where each jumper is intending to land, and alternate plans if things don't go according to plan "A" are all a part of this evolution.

- Slider up jumps: Jumping a slider at the bridge is an advanced technique due to the lower airspeed you will encounter.  Lower airspeed with a slider creates variables.  Off heading openings, sniveling of the canopy opening, and intentional beach landings are all a part of this evolution.

- Unpacked jumps: Removing your bridle and pc, hanging the canopy down below you and front flipping over the canopy, called a rollover or "McConkey", holding the canopy in your hand and throwing it up in front of you as you exit, called a TARD or "Totally Awesome Rapid Deployment", and finally a TARD over, where you do a front flip while holding the canopy in your hand, are all a part of this evolution.

- Night jump: Jumping the bridge at night can be done safely if the proper preparations are done beforehand.  We will walk you through the various differences of jumping the bridge at night and do a night jump with you.

- Water landing with a round canopy: Jumping a round canopy off the bridge and intentionally landing in the water is available for an additional fee. We will pack the round for you while you supervise, then arrange the boat to pick you up, as well as drying the equipment for you.

MAC

The Moab Advanced Course (MAC) will introduce you to BASE jumping skills extremely useful in the Moab area or any type of backcountry BASE jump.  The course is aimed at jumpers with no or very little slider down ā€˜Eā€™ experience or those who seek the guidance of an experienced BASE jumper familiar with the intricacies of jumping in the area on their first visit to Moab.

Where:
Moab, Utah

When:
Please check our calendar for the MAC dates (https://www.apexbase.com/base-jumping-courses/base-jump-course-calendar).
Individual course dates can be scheduled depending on the availability of instructors.
